Good Pre shot Routine = Good Putt
You've played a great tee shot and your approach has found the green. You're around 25 feet from the hole with the potential for a Birdie, but more likely a Par. Two skills are required now: the ability to "read" the Putt and the ability to control your distance on the Putt.
Good putters have a process they go through to help them 'see' the Putt. That process starts as they walk up to the green, continues with a careful observation of how other balls have rolled on the green (even with chips, pitches and approach shots) and finally focuses on the area within 4 feet of the hole.
Just as you have a pre-shot routine, make sure you have a routine that you walk through, quickly and effectively, to give you a picture of your Putt before you line up to play the stroke.
One fact to take on board is that the brain cannot develop picture of a Putt, if you are on the move. Your eyes and head need to be still while the brain visualizes a 'roll' that results in the ball falling into the hole.
There are numerous tips, we can help you with, which will help you to get the most accurate read.
On the longer Putts most golfers struggle less with the read and much more with the control of distance with their Putting stroke. I see a lot of putting practice dedicated to getting the 4 - 12 footers in the hole but very little to practice focused on the control of distance. Get distance right and you will quickly start removing 3-putts off the scorecard.
